We Stand with You. We Support You.

a city protest with the statement Black Lives Matter overlaying the image.

To our campus community:

As many of you know, our department typically publishes content related to technology resources, system maintenance, and user education of our tools. We’re reminded that questions of technology, digital access, and data are not separate from social justice and racial equity. We must further admit that, although we try to be as helpful and proactive as possible, we have the privilege to wait for our users to come to us.

Essentially, you tell us what you’re trying to accomplish—what you need. However, with the unjust events that have transpired and continue to occur in our country it is our time to come to you. To our Black community we understand that there can be no peace without justice, and we stand with you, we support you.

Sincerely,

The Information Services Staff

What might people around campus see you doing when we return?

Around campus…wandering the campus (not aimlessly) between offices. Maybe at the Help Desk once or twice. Helping in other offices at times with issues. At the fitness/wellness center around 11:30 a.m.

What is the most common phrase you say in your position?

I’m on it.

What is the best tip you can give someone?

Being positive and listening. Usually when someon is asking for my help they are nearing an end maybe in terms of patience, they have a deadline or maybe it’s just their comprehension of the data/application. Just be positive and let them explain (maybe even vent some) what it is they need. Being positive I think just reassures them that we are going to accomplish it and get through it, there’s no shame in asking, and let me just be another tool to get your job done.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?

Yes I guess. My wife would say my ability to store what she calls “useless trivia” is impressive. Especially my sports knowledge (I am a bit of a sports junkie).

What is your go-to karaoke song?

Well I am pretty up front in admitting that I am what you call tone-deaf. I love music and I even learned to play a bit of a guitar many years ago-all of which I forgot. If people were listening to my karaoke song it would need to be an acoustic version for their sake. If nobody was listening though…I’m Not Okay by My Chemical Romance.

What might people around campus see you doing?

If you time it right, you might see me getting coffee at The Book Club. Otherwise I’m bent over a keyboard in an undisclosed location.

What is the most common phrase you say in your position?

Testing proves that testing works.

What is the best tip you can give anyone?

Get a Password Manager…use it and back up its contents somewhere safe. You may think it’s ok to use the same password for everything, but it really isn’t. Don’t be a statistic.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?

I’ve run Dungeons and Dragons games in venues as small as the local game store and as big as the annual game convention GenCon in Indianapolis. Not sure if that counts as a hidden talent though.

What is your go-to karaoke song?

Trust me, it would be better for everyone if I stayed away from a karaoke mic. However, if I did…I would pick something like Party in the USA, but sing the Weird Al Yankovich version…Party in the CIA.
