Reserving Computer Labs for Classroom Instruction
The following labs may be reserved from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, and other times via special request. Help Desk or Media Services staff will be responsible for unlocking the lab or classroom; please do not call Security or ask a departmental secretary unless otherwise advised by a Help Desk or Media Services staff member.
Computer Facilities Available for Classroom Reservation:
- Olds-Upton (OU) 312 PC Classroom
- Olds-Upton (OU) 321B PC Lab
- Dow Science (DS) 224 Macintosh/PC lab
- Dewing (DE) 207 Dual boot Macintosh lab
Reservation requests for any computer classroom or lab should be made through the EMS – Book a Room system. For further instructions on using EMS visit the Book a Room website or email KMedia@kzoo.edu. Please do not drop-in and use a computer lab for instruction without a prior reservation.
Requesting New Software for Labs and Classrooms
In order to request software for labs and classrooms the following policy will need to be followed. Additionally, please keep in mind that Information Services receives many requests for software to be loaded on machines in the microcomputer labs. In many cases, the request is for software to be used in a class immediately. Unfortunately, many software programs, including small freeware products, can cause problems with software already loaded. In some cases, the addition of the new program has caused the machine to stop working altogether.
- A faculty member wishing to have software added to computers in any of the labs must supply Information Services with a copy of the program and work with the staff to prepare a series of tests to verify the software’s functionality. The testing phase could last a day or longer.
- If a faculty member supplies the software, a copy of the software license also must be supplied for our records. We will not load software that is not properly licensed.
- After successful tests in Information Services’ offices, two weeks’ notice is needed to load the software on lab machines.
- The Information Services Department will review software requests on a regular basis to decide which packages are eligible for institutional funding. Software to be used by many departments will receive higher priority. Software requests for one course or one department will be reviewed and prioritized by the committee.
- While software for use by everyone on campus will be installed in all lab machines, software which will be used only by an individual department will be installed only in the labs of the building in which the department resides or in a lab agreed upon by the department and Information Services.
Thank you for working with us to improve technology services for the campus community.
For questions or to make a request please email the Help Desk at HelpDesk@kzoo.edu.
Reporting a Computer Lab Problem
To report an issue with a computer lab please email HelpDesk@kzoo.edu or call the Help Desk at 269.337.5800 with the following information:
- Your Name
- The unique computer name
- Brief description of the problem you encountered. For example, if a piece of software isn’t working correctly please give us the name of the software, what you were trying to do, and the result. If possible, include any error codes you received.
- Example of a useful description: “SPSS failed to open. Instead of the program window I got a popup that said error code -4546 when I clicked the shortcut.”
- Example of a less useful description: “SPSS doesn’t work.”
